How to tighten steering belt?

Postby szyblaszczyk » Wed Dec 28, 2016 3:03 am

Hi! I know that it's quite popular problem and solving it's quite easy but I can't find tutorial how to tighten the steering belt step by step?

My Hyundai Coupe is Gen 3 (GK) 2002 1.6.

Am I right that I should loose one of the screws?

But what next guys? Please explain because it's getting worse and worse with steering belt!

You need to loosen the bottom bolt and then the one right at the top (not shown in your photo - it is the one that clamps to the slider). Post another picture showing more of the pump if you like and I'll pinpoint the exact ones.

With both bolts loose you then need to pull the pump away from the engine to tension the belt before tightening the bolts again. A piece of wood can help provide the necessary tension by levering the pump.

Hi again. I added 2 photos. I think that this plastic cover for engine make this impossible to solve this problem and I need suitable tool, am I right?

However, the thing is that when I asked two times mechanic to help me to solve this problem he just make very tight on the screws and it was fine for couple of weeks! He didn't do anything with the pump etc.

Any idea what did he do exactly? What's important, I have problem only with ORANGE belt. That's the one which get loose after some time and which is loose now.

Your bolt no. 3 in the first photo is the pivot point - so that needs loosening - and there'll be another bolt to loosen at the top that clamps the pump in place. Remove the plastic engine cover (four 10mm bolts) and you'll see the bolt you're after.

Hard to tell exactly what's going on since the engine cover is still in place but it looks like you've got the pump pivoting okay. Might the belt be too big and hence you're at the maximum extent of travel? The cover needs removing to be sure.

Did I unscrew right bolts? Confirm please if I did the right thing.

For now I can't unscrew bolts from engine cover. Don't have suitable tool.

No problem! I asked mechanic and I need new belt.

Is this one will be okay? Ebay Item:390669959740

To confirm what I'm looking for:
The orange belt needs to be changed ASAP.
