2003 V6 belt squeal - advice please.

Postby brucelee34 » Mon Mar 11, 2013 1:27 pm

Hi all.
The aux belt is squealing on my v6. The belt looks brand new and apparently the cam belts were changed before I bought it. However, I am not sure whether the belts can be tightened by myself. I have looked for a walkthrough but not found one. Does anyone have a method or can point me to a thread where i can tighten this belt and stop the squealing.
thank you in advance.

This is a hyundai belt on it, it is brand new..... The cam belt was done before I bought it so maybe the belt needs to be re tightened?
Is there a way of tightening the belt?

Theres usually the need to retighten a short while after aux belts are fitted, as they can bed in a bit and loosen off- ignoring it can lead to the belt wearing prematurely.
there should be an adjuster on the belt, however if it's power steering, it may simpy be a case of loosen the bolt slightly, then jam a screwdriver in the pump bracket and lever it tighter.

Good job WD40 doesn't corrode rubber. And also a good job that's not a ridiculous idea.

A bit lof talcum powder can be used to quieten belts down, but only if they're properly adjusted

I used that Belt Up stuff and it made the belt worse. Now it is a horrendous cacophony of the original noise plus noises unheard since the Pterodactyl died out.

I know I need to tighten the belt but there is no way of doing this. The power steering pump is fixed and bolted without scope to adjust . I can;'t work out the alternator movements for the life of me. Someone on here must have adjusted a belt on a v6 cpupe. I went all the way to a dealer in st albans who told me they did not know how to do it either.. the guy in servicing also said he did not know.... I'm beginning to think that adjusting the belt is an urban myth that cannot be done.

Can be done, but i never done a v6, so can't say how. To tight can also squeal, if it's tight as it'll go,put a small bit of slack in.

Its quite loose as I can invert the belt with my hand. The noises really are bad though and that belt up made it way worse.

Somebody on here must know how to tighten an aux belt. I find it remarkable that Hyundai are saying that don;t know and nor does everyone on a hyundai coupe forum. Surely if you've changed a cambelt you would have had to take the aux belt off.

I know how, on a 1.6 or a 2.0. Not certain on if a V6 is set up exactly the same. On 2.0, theres 2 bolts to loosen (by half a turn each). the pump should be on a bracket, with a slider groove in it. One bolt locks it to this groove, the other bolts the pump to the bracket- only neds to be able to pivot on that one. Once bolts are slack, use a lever of some type to pull it tighter.

I looked for that but couldn;t see that on the v6. It looked almost fixed in place. It is very odd indeed.

the v6 belt has an auto adjusting tensioner. If its squealing you need to replace the tensioner.

Ah ! Now we are somewhere!! I can see the tensioner you speak of - is it just a matter of unbolting it and putting a new one on ?

Thanks for that Angelus . It does make sense that it is auto tensioned as the alternator/power steering punp seem to have no scope for adjustment.

Also, the tensioner and waterpump SHOULD have been changed at the same time as the cambelt as its part of the same kit (if genuine).

The crankshaft pulley is also starting the war (the rubber between the two parts). so.. crankshaft pulley and serpentine belt tensioner.
Oh well... Now to try and find some parts.
