New stereo for Siii

Postby georgeb » Sun Sep 19, 2010 9:19 pm

I'm looking to replace my standard Hyundai stereo for an alternative as I can't get mt Ipod to work with it - probably a fault as it won't even recognise it. Has anyone replaced it with an ipod compatible unit? Looking for something easy to fit and perhaps with bluetooth??

Planning to buy my new stereo tomorrow - it's going to be between a Sony or JVC headunit both with bluetooth. I was going to let the guys at Halfords fit it but then they told me they couldn't do it until next week so i'm going to have a go at doing it myself. From reading some of the posts on here and other forum sites it sounds like it could be as straight forward as removing the old stereo and slotting in the new stereo (wiring harness sounds like it is standard?) Alternatively I am prepared to remove the silver facia which looks like it will just pull off. I still want to put an Ipod connector cable into the centre arm rest but wondering the best way to get it there - am I right in thinking that I should just remove one of the side panels from the centre console that runs along to the centre arm rest?

There's a thing on the Halfords site that checks whether a head unit will be suitable for your car. When I selected a Coupe against a Sony Bluetooth unit it reckoned I needed an adapter for the wiring which the store didn't stock. Worth a check.

Personal experience - Sony headunit I had wasn't good quality, think I only got about 2 years use out of it before backlight failed and it was unusable. On the other hand, I've always found Pioneer to be bomb-proof and survive being swapped from car to car.

i have never tried a sony but i agree, Pioneer are great.
for the best sound quality and balance i found Alpine to be the best but their CD changers don't seem last more than a couple of years.

I've had Pioneer CD changers for the last 14 years solid - but I'm still only on the second one! And yep, the head unit is actually a tape deck but has a full fascia so it doesn't show.
