Electrical fault

Postby chas » Thu May 31, 2012 5:49 pm

Hi
I have an odd one here - when driving along, almost every time I indicate or brake the radio briefly turns itself off and then resets itself to the low default volume that it plays at when you first turn it on. Sometimes the instrumentneedles for fuel/temperature flicker

Its almost like the whole electrical systems switches off and on really quickly - or the extra laod causes a current drop that makes the radio restart.

Its an SIII by the way and other than the previous owner having wired an Ipod connection into the cd multi changer feed its electrically unmodified.

Be grateful for any information

Chas

Sounds like a rectifier/alternator fault to me. Have you also had any headlight bulbs blow lately?

One blew a few weeks ago - took the opportunity to replace them all with some brighter ones as the standard bulbs were DULL

No trouble since then......I'll be teed off if the new ones blow prematurely though.

Agree with alternator. If you have multigauges then it should sit around 14V with the engine running, if it doesn't or it's intermittent then that's a sure sign

The only other thing i can think of, is that the radio power leads might be wired to an incorrect power feed.
Hazarding a guess, i'de perhaps be thinking that the switched/ignition feed for the radio has been wired up to the indicator stalk feed.
Difficult one really without having a look myself.

Interesting developments - notice now that the volt meter HAS started wandering around a bit - never used to

Took the car into dealer as it still has some manufacturers warranty on it - they checked and say the radio's faulty and theyre going to replace it under warranty. Bit of a result.....at least it will be if it solves the problem!

They replaced the radio saying it was faulty - which was nice
However, though all seemed well to start with - the radio now drops stations off the presets, defaulting to a random local station - doesnt go off and on though
voltmeter still wandering a bit - so maybe the regulator is a problem - due a service so I will try it on.
