hopefully not a right off

so had the pleasure tonight of some (and i quote) Clown running me into a high level curb in the snow today causing the rear nearside wheel to twist about 3". i managed to get the car home and checked the damage to find the trailing arm was now a loverly V shape which is going to need to be replaced. my good mechanic friend came to assess if the damage had gone any further. He said he cant see any damage to the axle so im just praying and touching wood its the case of a new trailing arm and nothing more. spent far to much time and money with this for it to be written off through no fault of my own. As for the other driver -

Depending on how readily the trailing arm and it's associate componants will part company with the rear subframe, this may require a wholesale replacement of the rear sub, link arms etc. This will be the thick end of £400odd (dealer prices) for the parts, so I hope the arms come off and are not seized/rusted solid like mine were.

Problem with mine was severe rust on the subframe. There was nowt wrong with the arm(s) per se, but the bushes and bolts for them had seized in the 'frame so I ended up having to buy the full set. One of those things you aint going to find out until it's on the ramps.

Something to bear in mind though, when they do the job make sure the chaps tighten the bushes etc withthe weight of the car on the wheels. My chap didn't and the r send skitted about all over the road until we found the cause. Most unsettling hitting rough tarmac at 60...

Good thing for you is, there're LOADS of cheap Gen1's about. You can get all the parts you need from one of them.

Did you get any information on the other vehicle involved?

Thanks for the edit Dupe, this isn't the place for that.

I very much doubt you'd go about reporting this to your insurance anyways? Are all your mods declared? There was no car involved so you'd be much better off fixing it on your own. There was a time when I looked at buying a new subframe for my old Gen2, I think I was looking at about £150 all in from a breakers, which is not too bad. It's quite a lot of work, but it's certainly do-able.

Sounds like it could have been a lot worse - just think if it was bodywork - you couldn't do it yourself and it'd probably cost a lot more than £150...

As Edd said - It's better that damage than mine was  Yours is much easier to repair.

And if you have no vehicle details for the other driver (and if they didnt actually hit you), there's not a thing you can do without acting illegally.

Sadly, you're better off just getting the car repaired and letting the matter go.

yeah i wouldnt of claimed regardless he didnt technically "hit me" but ive seen the kid a few times driving like an idiot round our area hes a young "chav" that thinks his car is a toy, hence the frustration. im off the road and forking out money for someone elses wrong doing. see were im coming from?

and as for the damage, granted the body work is fine but its whats been damaged further down the line im worried about. hoping the chasis or axle hasnt been damaged

and does anyone know the proper name for the trailing arm? seem to be looking every were and cant find anything

Try here... If it's the part I am thinking of it is referred to simply as "Rear Suspension Arm A or T".

been ringing around all afternoon for the new part but everyone im ringing is saying they dont know the exact name for the part. i decided to go and take the wheel off to see if i could assess the damage any further and take a few pictures, hoping someone will know the exact part name. Even the Hyundai stealers were struggling to identify the correct name!! maybe someone can help.

and to top it off when putting the wheel back on noticed a loverly screw in my tyre wall. and this is the same wheel which the abs is knackered on! and were the welding needed doing! and were a woman reversed into me! and were the sideskirt is slightly loose! hmmmm can see a pattern emerging here i think this is officaily the side of the devil!!

They are Rear Suspension Arms. FFS, what is wrong with those people! They came at £210 for all 4 in early '08, incl. the bushes, bolts etc.

You'd think the dealers would know, tell 'em that you need the "nearside rear suspension arms, from the subframe to the suspension leg and hub". If that don't let the penny drop then God Knows...

Don't seem like the price has gone up by much then! Has your nutsack stopped aching yet?

The price they charge for these things is rediculous, it's a stamped piece of steel. The subframe is a joke also, just tacked together and Japanned - plenty of hollows for the damp to linger too...

Rear subframe, arms etc should be the same regardless of LHD/RHD, but watch the year - there was a suspension revision late '99 early 2K, and the parts are not compatible.

just a thought. still worth having a word with your neighbourhood bobby as there are new laws regarding chav behaviour with motors. might still be worth raising it so numpty doesn't get away with it next time.

You've had my input mate, up to you at the end of the day... Take the gamble and have a longer wait or pay up for assurance of the correct part.

TBH, if it was me - I'd probably be looking at a complete rear subframe from a breaker for the revision of my car, but only coz (having done it once) I know what a git the bolts and bushes can be. I was quoted £75 for one (never got it coz of the aforementioned revision) with the arms etc but fitting was £150. Having seen it done it'd be a relatively straightforward DIY though, if you have stands etc. I took it off when I broke the car, but that was easy coz I flipped it onto the roof with a forklift...
