I find it vastly amusing that the Gen2 1.6's are getting worse/same MPG as the Gen3 V6's...

Any thoughts on the most economical speed to get max MPG on motorways?

Good question. I've a strong suspicion that it's not as simple as "faster=less economical, slower=more economical"...

hmmmm ya its a tough one, kinda a fine line between not over working the engine by driving fast and using more fuel like 70-80mph, and not driving too slow that it would make the journey longer and straining the engine from too low revs resulting in more fuel too.
places say that 55mph is the best and 2500rpm for petrol there meant to be the most efficient.
i find myself that sticking to 60-65 is best i tend to get 35-36mpg and i was on a 300mile motorway trip the other day doing 75-80 the whole way and i only got 32mpg.
main thing that effects it tho is acceleration, accelerating hard and fast will use alot more fuel than being slowly and gently

Darn good question! :)

My 2L auto varies wildly between short "towny" driving and long motorway journeys. I sometimes struggle to break the 30mpg barrier when its only local/short driving but when I travel down to my Mum's in the W.Midlands (just over 300miles for us) it really shines and I have repeatedly nudged the 40mpg barrier; even though its an automatic.

I am convinced that extended use of the cruise control (traffic permitting) plays a major part in that because its all about "gentle" in my view. Gentle on the brakes as well as the throttle. CC does that well for the latter. As soon as I get onto the M74 and its clearish, on goes the CC at 70 (GPS 70 as opposed to the inaccurate speedo) and I regularly get 38s or 39s (mpg) every time; aliied with a great journey time for the distance... I've done it before without the CC and have never managed to match those figures (and got an aching leg into the bargain!) ;)

It's been bugging me because I tend to stick the CC at 60MPH on the motorway but I'm not convinced that it's best. This was based on the old thought that 56MPH is best, without wanting to crawl along the motorway at a snails pace :) But surely, as has been said, there's a bit more to it than that. Each engine must have it's own optimal revs/speed? I'm driving a 2L Gen 3.5 btw.

In the 1.6 65MPH gets me 40+ to the gallon which is good enough if I'm feeling poor. Most of the time I suck it up and sit at 80 though.

Complete con.

HOWEVER. Maybe, just maybe if it's PROVEN BY YEARS OF DRIFT-RACING TECHNOLOGY, then it might work.

I hate this thread, I baby my v6 around and get 22mpg... Boot it and get 18!

That said on a 100% motorway run I've had 34 so meh, swings and roundabouts.

Interesting thing is that even after all my performance mods the mpg has remained the same!

I find around 65mph in my 2.0L gets the best MPG. Thankfully most of my driving is on the motorway, so I can just stick cruise on and get decent fuel consumption

Can someone explain to me why the fuel economy on my 2002 Gen 3 1.6 has improved drastically after recently resettting my ECU :?:

The ECU's learn how you drive, so if the guy who used to own it ragged it everywhere then it will be set up for that, you reset the ECU and drive it with less urgency and it learns that hence better ecconomy. You may notice it is a little less eager to accelerate.

you've got old and slowed down?

another strange thing is that on rolling road days the standard cars with the higher mileages got higher BHP readings than lower mileage versions, when most people say that an engine loses horses as you use it/it gets older.- strange.

As long as it's been looked after and not got high mileage then the engine itself will have loosened off and therefor produce better figures over a tight low mileage version. :)

I,ve had the car from new Sept 2002, its now got 95,000 on the clock and I,m not driving any differently, but I am definitely getting more MPG since resetting the ECU :)
