Looking at a V6 - Auto or Manual?

Postby jbenekeorr » Tue Jan 17, 2012 4:22 pm

Hi - i joined up here a couple of months ago, looking to get a coupe (one day when funds are there!) I was looking at a gen 3.5 2 litre but realised i could have a gen 3 v6 for about 2000-2500.

I like the idea of having an auto (because i'm lazy) - obviously they are a bit more rare than the manual but what i was wanting to know is:

Are they any good?
Do they sap power?
Are they reliable (any costly rebuilds after xx miles?)
Can you still have a bit of fun with them?
etc etc

I've searched the forum but didn't find a lot about the auto box.

Also - Can anyone confirm for me that the tax isn't in the £400+ bracket? I understand if it was registered before March '06 then it's about £260?
I didn't want to make a whole new thread for that question!

If anyone can give me their opinions on the V6 engine that would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance :)

Hello, it will be in the 260 mark for 03/04 but will be over 400 for a 05+.
Autos don't suffer from the same problems as manuals with regards to clutches, and you wont notice any difference in power between manual and auto. Its just a fun factor.
They are reliable, never heard of an autobox going.
If its been well looked after and has FSH then you shouldnt have a problem, there are several "common" electrical problems which are all sortable DIY with new parts (not from a dealer) which are cheap and easy to replace.

Bottom end knock can result in a 4 grand rebuild if the V6 engine hasn't been looked after, so make sure the service history is bomb proof. Mileage isn't great in the V6 so don't expect to drive past many petrol stations too

Thanks for such fast responses. I'm coming from a renault so some little faults don't phase me at all lol!

I know the v6 is quoted at about 28mpg average - that came as a bit of a shock initially but i don't do more than about 5000 miles a year so that's not so much of an issue. I'll make sure to remember to look at service history then! Really want the v6 for the sound and the torque! It's relatively insurable for the size of engine too - it's going to be £1100 for a 1.6 megane or £1600 for a 2.7 hyundai ... hmmmm!

Lol well what i should have said is it's insanely expensive but the hyundai isn't that much more insanely expensive in relation to the megane.... if you get what i mean?!

Oh while we're at it - what is the cambelt interval on these? And does the aux belt or waterpump want doing too?

I'd say the auto but I'm biased as thats what I've got. The box on the V6 is really smooth and it's based on a Porsche design so it's pretty reliable. I've never found a lack of performance ( in fact its one of the few autos that will wheel spin off the line) and it really picks up if you use the kick down.If you really want more control use can use it as a tiptronic to select manually. As an added advantage the auto is also better on fuel on a run than the manual ( on the motorway at 3000 rpm its doing 80 whereas the manual does 70 at the same revs.

Regards
Mike

Brilliant - thanks for more great replies! Auto box sounds like the one to have - i think when i can get the money together for one i'll look at manuals too due to the fact that the auto is harder to find but i'd certainly prefer one!

Hey buddy,
from copious amounts of reading many members refrain from the V6 due to certain reliability issues. i don't know whether that is down to the gearbox or the engine?
From the posts above it sounds like the auto is fine and you won't have a problem.
but i thought id try offer some advice so you don't regret it.
read some auto V6 reviews online

I've had my V6 auto for about 5 months now and I love it. You never tire of the smoothness and low down grunt. The autobox is faultless through the gears and makes all types of driving effortless. At junctions it's quick off the line and your at 30 before you know it! Out of town overtaking is made easy with the long throws of each gear. Economy wise I get a steady 30mpg mainly commuting to work and back with the odd thrash now and again. The autobox has a 'Torque Lock' system which works in 3rd and 4th gear, this eliminates slippage from the transmission at higher speeds and helps with fuel economy. I would look for a standard V6 with no mods and FSH. Regarding the 'bottom end issues' there are a few that have had problems but on the other hand I found that there are loads of V6's for sale with high mileage and still described as running like new so the reliability is there. Unlike a manual the auto also prevents you over revving which should ease stresses on the engine. Good luck wae your search.Cheers.

I recently posted up the Service Schedule here... Read down and it covers the Water Pump!

Excellent thanks so much for the help all! Funny I'd been on that thread with the service intervals in but that was before you posted that! Again, a massive help! Thanks :) had a nasty, wet and expensive incident with a water pump last year so I'm afraid of them!

I'd be a bit afraid of V6s. Someone should alert you that they should be cheaper than a 2 Litre, due to current fuel prices and the bottom end problems. Unless you find a rebuilt one, then you're on a bit of a winner. Especially after you wop an induction kit on one.

I wouldn't write all V6s off, just be aware of the potential of engine issues. Manuals can also have the Dual Mass Flywheel go which isn't cheap but not massively common

The 2.0 is by general consensus the most sensible choice

Couldn't you drop it into a decent car?

Oh, and get a proper gearbox too, none of this slack-jawed auto twaddle

the best performance gain for an auto v6 is removing the retard gearbox and fitting a proper manual one.

How great is the risk of bottom end issues? Is it generally just if it hasn't been serviced enough or can it happen to any?
