Jacking Points for the Coupe

Postby Boot_Fairy » Fri Jan 27, 2012 11:19 am

I read on the forum about where the best place to jack the car up is.

In the manual it says to jack the car up on the sills!! which as I agree with other members, I wouldnt like to do either!

I have done a bit of internet searching and found a diagram showing where to jack the car front and back to lift both front and rear wheels.

If someone with more experience can confirm this that would be great:

The Sill points should be re-enforced for Jacking.

When I painted my alloys and went to put the wheels back on, I jacked up the front on the sill points, as in the manual. Seemed ok, When I done the rear, 5 bumps on the hydrolic jack and started hearing cracking noises so had to stop as I started to see the sill bow outwards. So ended up waiting for my dad to come home and got him to put the jack under the car at a point to jack up.

As above, sill points are reinforced so IF in good condition they should be ok. However, I know of a couple of folks who put the jack through the metal on their gen1's - if it starts making cracking sounds and rust falls off it's not a good sign, rusting sills are increasingly common on the older gens.

No rust fell from mine, It might have been ok if I continued, but I just didn't want to risk anything.

The stock jack is designed for the sill and works fine in my experience, but the jack is rubbish.
I never managed to get my trolley jack to work with the sill and it just bends.
So i normally use the towing eye for the rear and a suspension arm for the fronts.

A suitable piece of wood placed between the trolley-jack saddle and the sill negates this issue, an offcut piece of 1" thick ply is ideal, of suitable dimension to spread the load. As it is, there should always be something between the saddle and the sill, even a thick piece of cloth will do, to prevent damage to underseal etc.

Jacking Points for the Gen 3/3.5/Siii Coupe

Postby hyunky » Fri Jan 27, 2012 2:06 pm

Mine is structurally sound but there is a bit of give when using the jack on the Sill point it must be said. I still use it mind!

Didn't notice anything on the back but when I did the front (getting it up to paint calipers) you could tell it was 'bending' slightly somewhere as when opening the door when it was up it became a bit 'sticky' (did the same on both driver and passenger sides when I did them)! Would imagine the strengthening the strut bars gives would help this?

WARNING! From experience (garage doing it not me)... Using trolley on Sill Jack points will cause bending/pushing out of and miss shape at bottom of front wings under Gills if it's used too far over that way! mnemonic advice above will negate problem I would imagine!

where did you get that diagram? Isn't that a Honda S2000 that's pictured? I asked my mechaninc the other day where to jack and he said for the front I should jack on the plate that is triangular shaped that connects suspension to chassis (I think) and for the back I could use the bit where the suspension arm joint is just inside where the sill jack point is.

I take it you found that amusing then. I don't think that a strut bar would help, though I am surprised it occurred.

Was being completely serious mate! I'm not 100% sure at all that the very slight 'bend' (and it is very slight) that throws the doors out slightly is not somewhere else in the chassis/body and not in the sills themselves. Thinking physics (a while ago for me :D ) I imagined with only one front wheel taking all the side on pressure/weight and the other up in the air that the movement/bend might be less with a strut bar strengthening and holding it all together? I don't know, just throwing an experience I had for anyone reading this!

Pictures of recommended points for Trolley Jack would be help full!

I meant the use of the word 'negate', lol - been posting too often with TrisM i think

I've always just gone with the sill points, just used a length of wood about twice the saddle and the same width (the saddles are usually circular, but you know what I mean) - might be onto something with the braces, they are there to stop the chassis twist. You certainly notice a difference when putting one on a gen1.

I find the ramp in our stable to be fine on the sill jacking points

A ramp in your stable? Pip pip. Tally ho. <insert further pretentiousness here>

It would seem S2000s don't like being jacked on their sills mind. Check the manual for your car; go with what it says there.

I just went on google and typed in jacking point for a hyundai coupe and clicked on images and it came up with that one.

The manual says the sills, but i just have a feeling that if I did use them points, something would happen. I might just ask my local garage to show me where they would jack it up under the car and mark the spots with paint.

I've always used the sills, the same on previous cars as that's what the manual usually says and that's how the jacks are designed.

I never thought of a cloth to protect the underseal though

I used to use the towing eye or subframe at the front and the toying eye or lower suspension joint at the back at times too

Most garages will say to use the sills.

I usually use one of the subframe bushes/mounts with a trolley jack. Regardless of car.

If I were using a trolley jack I'd probably look elsewhere to jack the car up - the reason I use the sills is because that's what the stock jack is designed for.

Taken from the Chilton Hyundai Coupe/Sedans 1994-98 Repair Manual, for the Gen 1 but I imagine all Gen's are similar

I wouldn't want to jack on the sills of a Gen1/2 these days.
