Fuel Efficiency?

Postby PJBCoupe » Thu May 13, 2010 5:16 pm

Any tips for increasing fuel efficiency, other than drive slower etc etc, would be very gratefully received, thanks

smooth gear changes, no sudden braking/acceleration, try not to travel when there is a lot of traffic about.

Other things like do not have clutter in your car, make sure your tyres are pumped up. Avoiding driving with your windows down unless you need to as this can consume up to 5mpg, same would apply to air conditioning.

Another one that people don't realise is thinking you gain mpg from putting your car in neutral when waiting at the lights. It is proven that if you have your clutch firmly to the floor it saves fuel. (and gives you a dead leg) :)

Knackers your clutch at the biting point, not with your foot all the way down on the clutch :)

The thrust bearing, not the plate - especially with the Coupe's pull-type clutch

pah, mpg... I dont like to talk about that! 20mpg here... doh!

As for saving fuel tips, as the above have said. smooth gentle accelerating, decelerate by lifting off and gentily applying brakes, smooth in and out of bends/junctions. I also tend to find that keeping revs at 2500-3500 gives best economy, below and your loading the engine, above and your well, using more lol. IF your able to plan your driving and look far enough ahead you should have no need for sudden acceleration or braking so should be able to achieve a smoother drive which will not only use less fuel but will put less load on your car as a whole and make your driving safer.

now I sound like a driving instructor... oh wait, im an observer for the IAM :)

the quickest or shortest way to somewhere is not always the most fuel efficiant, plan your routes to avoid stop starts/ round abouts..

I've improved mine by going along a longer 50mph stretch home instead of the shorter country road sections.

i bought my f2 evo as a more economical car! on the way back from buying i managed over 320 miles on 3/4 of a tank, currently on 350 with plenty left. all done by planning and looking ahead and keeping the speed constant. i have done one b road blast, but it has been suprisingly economical.

Thats good, i get 300 to a tank with the usual commute, although did get 370 on way to Sunderland earlier in the year.
I ran some redex through the car when i 1st got it, to clean out all the coke from the engine, likewise a good service will help it run better, clean up the throttle bodies.
O, and tune up the engine :D I seem to be getting better mpgs now, about town i never go above 2500rpm, and on dual carriageways once settled at 70, I'm using less revs than i was before, seems to added a couple mpgs.

The key as far as I have gathered, is smoothness; being in the correct gear and driving well has worked as far as I have noticed.

Take that induction kit off if you have one or anything like that. I can't quote MPG figures for my coupe tbh.

Remember drag as well, sticking an England Flag on top of your car may be patriotic, but it'll nuke your fuel consumption. Same with Windows open etc.

Weight Saving is good, Just.. Err. Don't take the spare tyre out. I suppose there's mileage to be had in half filling the fuel tank, but remember if you're running low on fuel consistently then you're going to be dragging the dregs through your fuel filter...
