Fuel economy and measuring

Postby zzzmaillists » Sat Jan 28, 2012 6:24 am

HI There
As some of you may remember i am not the best of mechanically minded people

Couple of related questions, as I have changed jobs and trying to manage my fuel costs as best as possible!

1,
My 2004 2.0SL seems to always have a discrepancy with how much fuel seems to be left, the digital "miles remainding to needing fuel" seems to be over generous whilst the fuel light may still come on (it may show I have 80 miles left, while the dial is nearly on empty then the fuel light comes on). erring on the side of caution i fill u based on the dial, does this sound right?

2, I have taken a new job which means sadly more mileage to and from work (travelling from North Anston to Newark)
Is my journey more fuel efficient by trying to avoid the A1?

With a coupe is there a more efficient "speed" I should be doing? Google tells me 50-55mpg is where fuel efficiency works best and wondered if anyone had any other tips other than the usual windows up and light loads.

Thanks for any help/guidance or advice, its appreciated as always

1. Always ignore the computer. Don't risk it, it's an estimate based on how many miles you managed on the last tank or something. Either way it's not reliable. Always go by the fuel gauge and if the light is on, fill up!

2. I've found the 2.0 gets better mpg around 40-50mph where as the V6 seems to handle higher speeds better due to the 6 speed gearbox. Try all the possible routes to work, one per week, and see which you get the best mpg on. It'll depend a lot on your driving style as well as the car in some cases.

Best thing to do is go on www.fuelly.com and sign up on there. You can create a profile for your car and enter in your fuel ups and it will calculate your mpg for you. It also has a bunch of useful tips for how to save fuel.

Personally doing the Durham to London run I find motorway / A road should give better fuel economy (less gears changes and you run longer at lower revs).

Last time I purposely tried to do it at about 65mph rather than 70 mph. It was a more comfortable journey, quieter and I had quite a bit more fuel left than a normal 70mph run. Doesn't sound like much of a speed reduction but it seemed to work.

Thanks for all the advice, driving at 55-60mph and doing so at 2,500 revs on the A1 for a while and see how that goes ....

with regard to the digital clock, as its not accurate does it not need fixing?

Would love to floor it, but was recenltly made redundant and took a new job on less money !!
hence me trying to keep my car and drive more eco friendly lol

The digital display seems to work on your last 10 minutes or so of driving. Hence why I left work with 64mile range yesterday and arrived home with 73. (heavy traffic in, no traffic & motorway home)

as with the computer reading it is entirely dependent on your driving style at that time. If you're on the motorway you could see 60+ miles, in town then more like 20-30. I would hazard a guess that the fuel light comes on when you have about two gallons or less in the tank, work out the rest...

btw, as i see it the computer is an indicative calculation based on the amount of fuel in the tank and [PROBABLY] the amount of fuel you have used in your last 10 or 20 miles of driving. It is an estimate that is equivalent to your average mpg (like in most car computers), it is just displayed in a different (and harder to understand) manner.

It's 9 litres according to the manual* - so depends on your MPG....

EDIT: * Hmm Since typing this i suddenly doubted this figure and sure enough i can't find it anywhere.....

If that's right or not, it IS known QUANTITY of fuel and not mileage based.

If the lights on, it's time to refuel.

I know from experience not to trust the computer, as soon as the light goes on fill up. If you leave it you could be spending time on the hard shoulder of the motorway waiting for the AA :(

Sign up to Fuelly it's a great way to keep an eye on your MPG.

I mostly drive the A66 and A1, but have a bit of 30-40 at either end. If you try not to accellerate too harshly and stick to 60 you get better MPG, got 370 miles 34.2MPG out of the last tank, but I know I can do better. It takes discipline. It also depends a lot on weather and road condidions so you can't say exactly how many miles left once the light comes on. I got to Asda one week and ran out on the A66M the next.
