Bad Bad Bad Fuel Economy

Postby ScreamJosh » Fri May 28, 2010 6:44 pm

Considering my car used to get 300 miles out of a tank and I was worried when it started getting 250, but sort of lived with it. However now I'm getting 210 - 215 out of a tank  Now I don't know when it last had a service because it came with no service history so next week its getting booked in to see if thats where the problem is, but I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas what it could be? and why its gradually gone down

dire need of a service me thinks. is the exhaust blowing? tire pressures ok? i have quite a lead foot so for me that would be the main cause

yeah get it serviced good and proper and see how that goes. don't expect instant results though as it will take time for the engine to clear out and the ECU to compensate for that. check your oil level aswell, if thats low it will use more petrol, but if its that low expect the worse

I recommend having the fuel filter looked at as part of the service. What sort of miles are you on? Think this filter wants looking at every 3 years or so. If its spent your economy will noticably drop.

Check your air filter and vents for crap as well. Air is good for the lungs!

thanks for replying guys. Tires and exhaust are fine, I've recently only just change HT leads and air filter. I will get them to look at fuel filter for service though. Cars on 75,000ish miles, but as I said I dont know when it was last serviced or anything.

Josh, recommend you have a flick through the service interval breakdown in the back of the coupe manual and have the whole shabang for 80,000 miles listed done. It may seem a bit steep but, welding and engine block aside, you can assure yourself that you will then know the history of the car, or at least know what consumable items (such as tyres, brake pads) are forth coming.

What petrol do you use, if its normal unleaded, then once in a while stick in a tank of super unleaded, as it has stuff in it that'll clean out the fuellines.

Don't know if it may be relevent, but my m.p.g.has improved no end since I started putting Redex in.I used the Petrol Injector one,and so far have used it in about 100 litres of fuel.I know these claims always attract controversy and debate, but can't ignore what seems to be happening in front of me.Maybe also it has taken the ECU eight weeks to get used to my driving style.Any opinions welcome.

the redex is rated for clearing out the system, it has the same effect as super unleaded, it doesn't however, gain bhp, just reclaims lost bhp.

Yes,agreed...the car's performance has not really changed, but the m.p.g.has.Prob.cheaper to do every other fill-up with super, than put Redex in all the time...interesting to try and work out,but complicated.Cheers....

Tesco are doing Petrol Redex half price at the min, so have stuck in 50L of fuel with half a bottle of it tonight. I usually get through 25L of fuel a month, so will give it a week and see if I notice any difference...

Wang in some Redex with a full tank of VPower, give it a nice long drive. If that doesn't work, change the fuel filter. :)

well I sent it if for a service and I have 290 miles down on my clock from a full tank and i've got just under a quarter left so hopefully its sorted. Its mainly all been done on the motorway though, which is not my everyday driving, but I will find out shortly if it has worked in the long run. :D
