auto transmission

Postby mattyg » Mon Feb 28, 2011 1:50 pm

Hi I have a gen 1 f2 evo auto and when cold, the gear change from 1 to 2 is very harsh, and the rest of the gear changes slip. When the cars warmed up the auto box works lovely.

I did check the level and it was a bit low, so topped it up and it hasnt made any difference. The car only has 41k. Would a transmission fluid change do the trick or could this be more severe??

Really hope someone has some experience of this, thanks in advance. The transmission fluid for these things is quite expensive so I dont want to be throwing money away, and I definitely dont want to be saying goodbye to the car just yet.

What colour was the fluid in there? If dark or burnt colour get it changed ASAP. Most if not all the auto box problems I've ever heard of on coups were all down to the fluid needing flushing and replacing.

Poor fluid can kill auto boxes, but is a nice simple cheap fix. Manuals also have the exact same cold symptoms too when the oil is low or old - very hard to get into gear or notchy. I replaced mine and all was super.

Hi mattyg, mines having a similar issue to the issue you were having but mine probably worse, as now my 1999, Gen1 F2 evo auto will not engage any gears - it allows me to shift it to Drive or Reverse or any other gear butno forward or reverse motion just revs when i step on the accelerator.

Anyway did you get your auto transmission fluid flushed and replace?

Any tips as to where to go to get this done and cost etc?

Just make sure you do NOT use any Dextron ATF! SP-III is the only grade of ATF currently recommended by Hyundai for use in their automatic vehicles.

Hyundai ATF SP-III is not available anywhere other than from a Hyundai dealership, but contact Opie Oils and he will recommend some other alternatives. However, be aware that Hyundai ATF SP-III is cheaper than most he recommends.

Just make sure you check with your Handbook or Dealer on ATF capacity before draining the old fuid! 8-)

Thank for your tips jedflorex, unfortunately the 2 Hyundai Dealerships close to me seem not to have the Hyundai ATF SP-III in stock, so i will be going with Opie.

as i said on the other thread - from research i gather it's 6.6L but not 100% sure because i didn't have the manual for the f2 evo, so if anyone here who has a manual for the Gen1 f2 evo auto can confirm, that will be great. :)
