As said Brake cleaner is ace at cleaning all the oily and greasy bits , and after that i spray soap or foam and wash with the karcher,
works a treat, then some plastic conditioner.

Every car i clean gets blasted with a power washer no problems at all just try not to go too close to the sensors and wiring.

i simply use is bucket of hot soapy water with some cloths and maybe small dust pan brush, get stuck in .then a can of back to black spray to give the hoses and covers ie engine cover and fuse box and caps a lovely clean shine, then its a simple wipe down with every car wash to keep it looking sweet,

had my gen1 engine pressure washed and i was a nervous wreck the whole time. seeing all that water and soap spreading all over the engine bay really had me at my nerve's ends lol

anyway, what they did was coverup the battery, alternator and distributor with thick cloth and plastic for good measure.

Car started up without a hitch after the clean. won't be going back to that route though. waterless engine cleaning for me from here on end. :)
