They Sanded My Fogs At Hyundai!

Postby lloyd4571 » Thu Jun 03, 2010 5:11 pm

Well just got the car back from an MOT and service at Hyundai Minstergate In Hessle and it looks and drives great!! New brakes and a clutch were in order but my surprise of the day was that it failed on, as they put it, 'rear reflectors being in poor condition'. Because they were slightly tinted they sanded the fogs down till they were red and then it passed the MOT. Cheeky buggers! Its not even a dark black just slightly tinted. Oh well I will just get another set off ebay and do them, I will then keep the spare red set to put on when MOT time comes again next year ;) . To my delight though the car passed with flying colours on its headlights even though I did fit HIDs earlier on in the week before I took it in. Looks like they can stay on the car then! Anyone else had their fogs sanded during an MOT due to being tinted?

Surely that's unwanted damage to your car and they should have just failed it, unless you gave them the OK...

Nope never even got told that it failed on that. i was told it failed due to a leaky pipe which they sorted. have to spend 35 quid to get a new set and tint them again. going to re-sand the ones they did to keep as a spare set buy yeah they didn't do a very good job on them and they r pretty knackered.! Bit annoyed but guess it had to be done to pass :/

If the tester felt that they didn't allow enough light through or as they are also your rear reflectors didn't show enough red then the only other option would have been to fail it.

Moral of the story 'don't over tint your lights'.

Personally I think no tinting should be allowed. Don't get me wrong, I like the look, however having followed numerous members with tinted rear lights in bad weather conditions none of them let enough light through. You are so concentrated on the car in front to see if he has put his brakes on you become tunnel visioned and ignore other things going on around you.

I'd be checking with a solicitor and seeing if you can claim for the new ones, although not much money, it is annoying, and get back at them, I know if it was mine I'd have kicked off with them, not left until they supplied me with a new set (as they sanded them I'm assuming old set scratched).
For future reference, its worth asking the local Saxo boys where they had MOTs done, as some garages are more mod friendly, assuming its only a minor infringement/grey area, they'll put it as an advisory. Others are like concourse judges, and will fail it on every mod.

egg has a point here
they have carried out work on your car without permission so this is criminal damage even if they were an mot failure they should not correct a fault without your permision especialy one which cannot be undone. how did they know you did not have a spare set?
i would threaten to sue for the cost of new hyundai replacements

The thing is I have had cowboy MOT testing guys in the past and I just realised the car is still worth a good amount of money so why am I skimping on the MOT. That's why I took it to Hyundai as I wanted a proper full MOT and service together. I know its really annoying but I have read in the past that you need rear reflectors visible for an MOT pass so It kinda my fault (even though I haven't tinted them dark at all - Check my car photos, they are only a darkish red). I needed the car back asap as it was off the road for ages due to brakes, clutch etc so I really just wanted it back. It did fail on a powers steering pipe that was leaking when they rang and told me and I think I remember saying whatever need doing just do it as I want it to pass and need the car back for that weekend that was coming up. Basically whether it was my fault or not that the fogs were sanded I got a new set off ebay for £30 so I will work on them and keep the damaged spares to put back on when its MOT time next year. It does need a good polish on both of them and one of them is all misted up inside but you do have ups and downs with modding. Its not the biggest cost I have incurred in the past month by far  But I did realise that my HIDs pass a Hyundai MOT so I think it was wort it just for that! :D I'm just glad it's all over and I can drive the car again....

No garage can legally undertake any work on your car without your permission... whether this be a phone call to advise you something else needs doing or an understanding that to do one job may require another part being replaced if it was naturally damaged in the process (e.g. a new gasket being needed) at which point an advisory call would still be nice. However I'd suggest that what you said easily constituted consent.

Forum rules do stipulate you cannot advise/discuss getting around MOT rules by swapping parts out that would fail to get a pass, then swapping back... Just thought I'd be the one to mention it lol.

  • Please don't talk about illegal activities, this includes talk of swapping parts out for the MOT.
  • Please don't post new and ingenious ways of scamming insurance companies.
