Opinions on Xtrons?

Postby Maccees » Fri Jan 13, 2012 11:55 am

I've seen quite a few people on here have bought units from Xtron. I got one last year, and it was really crap  The English translation was terrible and the whole thing just radiated cheapness haha, have they changed now? What do you think about them?

I had one a few years back, it worked perfectly fine but I had a few issues with my battery dying, my car was left still for 7 weeks, and then the satnav reset itself to be on China time (current and arrival times were WAY OFF haha). I tried to set it back but the satnav menus had all reset themselves to Chinese - since I cannot read Chinese I couldn't navigate the menus to reset the language lol.

I just bought a D710G. Only problem I've had with it is that I had to swap the red+yellow wires so the unit would remember settings after car had been turned off.

Sat nav works flawlessy, sound quality is spot on for what I want, bluetooth works great too. I got a reverse camera thrown in for free as well

Have had a rethink on getting the 2 din unit, as my wife has decided she like the dials where they are...!! also as my car has another year left on the warranty, not sure if hacking pieces from the cage is a good idea, was looking at the unit you have just bought, and think I will go for the same, a bit more than I wanted to spend, but having sat nav to is not bad. is swapping the red and yellow leads on this unit straight forward mate and any advice on fitting would be a great help joedeejay.

Thanks

The seller DOESNT do refunds, but will replace like-for-like if any problems under warranty etc.
I had a word with the seller, and has confirmed the warranty on the headunit will not be voided if you alter the ISO Block wiring. Need some red + blue bullet connectors, wire strippers and crimpers, just a simple task of cutting the red and yellow and swapping them with each other.

As far as fitting the headunit goes you need to buy some 5mm bolts, and there is several mounting holes on the Headunit. Drill hole into the OEM cage where the mounting holes are and use the new bolts to mount it to it, I just bought some from local auto spares shop for 60p. GPS Antenna is mounted just under my tax disc holder and gets full signal. That wire runs along the top of the glove box, and then along the door seal. Havnt got round to doing the reverse camera yet as its too bloody cold lol!

The only proper DIY involved is drilling 2 holes in the OEM cage for the 5mm bolts, and having to swap red/yellow wires. Everything else is plug and play. If you are wanting to use the iPod functionality as well you'll have to be inventive as I havnt got round to doing that either.

The sat-nav works flawlessly, Ive used it twice so far and its worked a treat. Has loads of route options, fastest, shortest, eco drive. Avoid toll, avoid congestion etc. 2011 Maps.

EDIT: Seller has put the headunit back up to full price + isnt offering a free reverse camera anymore (saved myself £65 then haha), this is the model up from what I bought. Has a more functional faceplate and user-friendly interface by looks of it, and is £10 more than the D710G. Ebay Item:190564970524

Thankyou mate for your time and great advice, the Ipod function is the most important part for me as would like to have full control through the unit, as me and all of the family have them, so will have to find away of locating the wire somewhere.

Glad the satnav works great which is not a must for me but is an added bonus, looked at the one you said on ebay with more functions, think I will go for this one, will let you know how i get on with it once I ordered it and fitted. thankyou you have been a great help

No problem, Ive had a look in the car and I think im going to mount it at the very back of the centre console (behind the gearstick on that little rubber tray). Drill a hole and use a rubber grommet for it. Wire doesnt seem long enough to be able to reach the arm-rest compartment where the standard iPod cable is. I'd personally go for the D711G, at £10 extra thats nothing really. I only got the D710G because it was £40 off and came with a £25 reverse camera for free.

i got eonon d1306 and im really happy with it, whilst it looks slightly cheapish, it works brilliantly, and sounds really good. Xtrons basically is eonon so i would go for either. But better to go with eonon as they actually make them, and you can get them fairly cheap.

I'll just cut and paste what i've wrote on another thread: Xtrons have a UK warehouse now so all their units are no longer imported. I even think next day delivery is included in price. Check their website as they are usually cheaper direct than through ebay: http://www.Xtrons.co.uk

Well im on my third xtrons unit now, and i have to say im happy with it, but at the same time not. Explaination below :P (model 956 GPS)
As all the chinease units do, it definately rediates cheapness. But mine has two sides to it, the normal music playing, radio side, and gps. Ill start with the music side first. Radio is brilliant, crisp and clear, change to ipod mode though and therell be a ton of bass, and no treble to be heard, then switch it to bluetooth music streaming, and theres no bass, but loads of distorted treble. A long fiddle with music eq settings, and ive got it roughly ok. Now the second side, the gps :) at first i thought it was rubbish, it was igo 8. It weas sold to me with (latest map guaruntee) which ill explain more about that in a min. I wasnt too hapopy with it, so i took the sad card inside, and had a look so if i could change the program. I looked inside the igo folder, and it had the maps from q1 (thats beginning of) 2008?? Yeah ok latest maps, so anyway i updated it to q4 2011, then realised i could add things like pois, speed cams, 3d buildings and terrain. So did so and was rather happy with it. Then after some searching i found that you can get access to win ce (Windows mobile operating system that the gps software runs from) so i did so, and now ivre really opened up the units possibilities, now when gps mpode is selected it brings up a screen showing current speed heading, and shortcuts to various used programs, including a big button for navigation, and another for obd2 program thats connected via usb to well the car :P So yeah after some heavy modding of the unit, im actually genuinely happy with it, even at the £200 price mark. Its awesome if you know how to unlock its potential :)

I'm totally new to all these DIY so please bear with my stupid questions.
  • What are "bullet connectors"? What are they used for and how to use them?
  • And by OEM cage, do you mean the cage in the car, or the cage included in the xtrons package? I know this is quite late but do you have some pictures as to where you screw / drill and how you mount the head unit?

Bullet connectors are basically just connectors that attach to each other. By cage they mean the cage thats on the car at the moment, as the cages that come with aftermarket headunits will not secure to the coupes. The cage needs only the middle bit cutting off, theres a guide in the diy section somewhere that i used to install mine, and its in nice and secure. As for where holes will need screwing, whilst most have holes in the same place, some differ and so youll need to measure up your headunit with your cage.

Unfortunately after use, my mind has changed completely. The unit i bought cost £200. To be honest, its not worth £50. There are loads of problems with it, sound isnt working on the rear left channel, (ive had to install another amp to power the rear speakers), the subwoofer output doesnt work on it at all, so ive had to use one of the front rca outputs. bluetooth has started crackling so music isnt really playable via bluetooth. The microphone for bluetooth calls isnt good enough and the only weay anyone will here me is if i lean toward the unit, which whilst driving, unsafe :/ In fact the only good feature of it is the radio and the sat nav. Now the sat nav you can modify so that you can access windows ce (the platform for which the sat nav runs) you can change your sat nav program, although to be fair igo is pretty good with a few slight modifications. But i have installed a program called wolf ncu (google it) and just modified two of the skins. But yeah, my opinion on xtrons/erisin (there basiically the same) there crap, and not worth the money, im contemplating selling mine and just getting a normal head unit cos i cant seem to find a half decent one thatll do what i want for around £200 mark.

I'm looking at getting the Xtrons D711G as a downgrade frmo my Kenwood double din. Has anyone got this unit and can offer some recommendations and/or pros/cons?

Ideally I would like a rear USB port to feed through my steering column as that is where my iPhone is located in a holder (don't want the wire trailing on the front of the unit).

I bought this unit a few months back, cant say that iam happy with it.

Cant play ipod playlists, sound quality not fantastic but does my needs, I can play playlist through a usb stick, so now use that instead of my ipod, satnav works well using Sygic Maps, build quality is not that good feels a bit flimsy, touch screen seems to work well, peronally I think you would be better off spending a bit more money out and get a branded unit.

It does not have a rear usb slot for your steering column.

Shame it hasn't got a rear USB port. I don't use playlists, so that wouldn't really bother me. As long it sounds moderately ok and the sat nav works efficiently then these are the main points. Does this have bluetooth too - I would have assumed so?

If I were to get a branded model then I would be paying a LOT more not just a bit.

Difficult to find these single din sat nav units with the motorised screens that are cost effective!
