2 or 4 Ohm Components - Also, stockish sub box?

Postby herulach » Sun Jan 22, 2012 11:02 pm

I'm looking to do a few modest upgrades to the sound system in my Gen 3. Head unit is a JVC KD-R721, taken out of the old car, a bit budget, but nice to have a bluetooth connection and rear usb so I won't be changing it too soon.

I've narrowed my component choice down to one of the JBL GTO series, any particular reason to choose 2 or 4 ohm models?

Also, has anyone succesfully built a stockish looking sub enclosure? I'm thinking of trying to fit an 8" in the space behind the passenger side rear light - there looks to be enough space in there to get a reasonable size without taking up too much of the boot I need to get 2 suitcases in there fairly often.

As far as am aware most headunits will only take a 4ohm, I'd double check with the more audio enthusiats on the site to make sure but for a safe bet i'd go with 4ohm if running from the standard headunit and 2ohm if you was planning on running them from a separate amp or something.

Thanks - I've actually scored a cheap 6 channel amp, so I'll be going with whatever comes out at a reasonable price.

Nope second hand jbl gto 6000, so not super amazing but definitely good enough. Going to attempt to get it behind the rear panel this weekend

Check the spec of the amp, either in the manual or online - If it'll run 2ohm front speakers, chances are it'll give them a bit more power too.

4ohm speakers should work with anything though.

EDIT: From what I can gather, the GTO6000 can take 2ohm speakers all round!

GTO 6000
RMS Power Output, 2 Ohm: 4 x 75 watts 4 x 75/2 x 125 watts
RMS Power Output, 4 Ohm: 4 x 50 watts 4 x 50/2 x 75 watts

Yeah, I originally was only planning an amped sub, and run the components off the head unit, but this was too cheap to pass up. Incase anyone else reads this it will run 2 ohm, but not bridged, as far as I can tell bridged its 2x100 + 150 into 4 ohms. Plenty for the stuff I'm planning (8" sub in a small enclosure)"

Be very carfull with amps.

Bridging channels dosnt mean it doubles the power and the ohm load stays the same.

These are great budget amps. I used to have 6 of the 4ch amps for a very low power install.

Load will stay the same as thats defined by the speakers not the amp. The spec only lists it as 350W RMS bridged. I assume those power outputs since they add up nice doubled (which is all people tend to do) it should be a fairly safe assumption as its a class D (or at least looks like one).

I may use the rear channels anyway, depends if I can fit it behind the trim whilst keeping the 6x9s.

The power rating is what it will do when given that load to drive. The amps will not do that power, sorry to say but if you check the book, the box and the sticker on the back of the amp they all say different things.

At least my 4ch's did anyway.

Its a second hand amp, so no box, just going by the pdf manual. TBH I'm not that fussed, the COmps I'm fancying (hertz DSKs) are only rated to 80W RMS and the sub 200. Should be comfortable enough, all I'm really interested in is playing my rock music at reasonable volumes. I won't be blasting dubstep trying to rattle the doors off!

What HU? They should have nice power for the Hertz but don't expect miracles with those amps.

The SQ won't be amazing but should have some nice midbass.

To be honest the amp was cheap enough to replace if i decide I don't like it. Like I said, I'm not really looking for insane bass, not least because I need the boot space so am limited to an 8 (or at a push 10) inch sub.
