There is a small chance you can call into a main dealer for them to look up your keycode.

Gen 1's had a backup sticker in the boot, under all the carpet, stuck to the metal.

Key code number

Postby hyunky » Tue Feb 14, 2012 1:18 pm

You can't buy a already programmed key for a Gen 3 over the Internet. It has to be done with the vehicle using special equipment/programmes!

The Key code is just the cut of the key and not immobiliser.

Simon in Essex wrote:Independent key cutters can not programme the key for you all though many say they can until they look a little harder and then find the keys they can programme are a year or so earlier in design, I spent three days trying to find someone and two said no problem until they tried and failed with their machines.

The little metal plaque I have attached to my spare key is the immobilliser code. Used for coding the keys to the immobilliser.

If the person over the internet has the right software/hardware of course they can. Most key cutters on the high street wont have the right equip.

gupmaster. Read the linked thread mate. You have a Gen 3. They need the Car to programme it!

Ok.. so if you lose your keys, but have your immob code, because you placed it nice and safe when you bought the car, as the manual will tell you to do, just in case you lose your keys. How are you supposed to take the car to them!?

The whole point of the little metal tag is so you can have new keys coded without having to break into you car, and then have it transported somewhere.

Difference Gen 1 - Gen 3 Key Codes

It's not an Immobiliser Code on a Gen 3, It's the cut of the key!

Ako89 wrote:just in case you lose your keys. How are you supposed to take the car to them!?.

You can get a key cut to get in... But then you will be setting the Alarm off if you've lost that as well... Then you have to either get someone out to you with the equipment or get it on the back of a truck to take you there... The way it is is the way it is. I'm not saying it's logical! Just been there done it. Simples!

But you don't need to break in if you have the key code for a Gen 3 but you can't start it. They made it harder for Security reasons and to increase the use of dealers apparently (I'm sure I read somewhere that the Immobiliser system is changeable/replaceable on the Gen 3 ie same Key Cut different immobiliser 'frequency' which would also make sense why the system is different between the Gens but can't find that thread at the mo)!

That will settle it! The main auto locksmith in Torbay doesn't have the equipment/programme for Hyundai's anymore due to cost issues. The nearest independent I found who could do it was a mobile guy based out near Trago, but didn't need to use him in the end as the local dealer saw me right!

Ah right, thats where the confusion is then. Its an immobiliser code on the Gen 1.

Most OEM immobs are coded into the ECU, so an ECU swap would be needed to change the frequency of the immob, whilst keeping the same key blade for the locks. Well, with most cars anyway. Fords are the easiest I've come across :) The Immob chip in the key is about the size of a small pill, and can be removed by pulling it out, no butchering of the key.

If you call the dealer for a key they will ask for the key number (the cut of the key). For the Gen3 at least this begins with a "T" and has about 5 numbers after it. They need this before they will supply a key, I assume they want it already cut?
When I called a dealer to get some keys done the guy informed me if I couldn't find it then it would cost £25 for them to supply the number, despite me wanting 2 keys he said I'd have to pay £25 for each key although he'd only need to check it once. I told him he wasn't explaining what this number was or where I was supposed to find it.
I rang again the next day saying I still didn't understand what this number was he was after and he checked it on the computer by putting my reg in - it literally took 5 seconds to get it on the screen and I asked why the hell that "service" normally costs £25 PER KEY even though they only need to find it out once regardless of how many keys were done. He had no answer for me.
They failed to supply the keys when they were "guaranteed" as I needed one for my remote starter on my Clifford alarm. I had to pay £75 to a mobile key cutter to cut and program one. I then went to have work done at that dealer that they'd wrongly diagnosed the fault once, fitted the wrong part, then not even had the part but still kept the car all day. After all this they told me I couldn't get them programmed any more as the ECU couldn't hold anymore (they were wrong, the ECU can hold 4 keys, but were adamant I couldn't have any more programmed!) but they wanted me to pay for them anyway. I told them EXACTLY where they could shove them!

I forget where I was going with that. Basically if by key code number you mean that one (the cut of the key) then don't bother ringing a dealer.
As for the programming you need all the keys you want doing at the same time. Ross did it easily despite having problems with my alarm kicking in another immobiliser every 30 seconds so he had to work fast lol.
