amp suggestions for components + 6x9s please

Postby EvoCoilin » Mon Jan 17, 2011 8:27 pm

Hi all, was recently drinking and at 4 in the morning (rubbered i might add :) ) bought new speakers for my car.
I bought vibe black air 6.5" components
http://www.vibeshop.co.uk/product/Black ... _Blackair6
and vibe black air 6x9s
http://www.vibeshop.co.uk/product/Black ... blackair69

Due to the possibly excessine amounts of alcohol in my system, i immediately went for the shiniest items  not noticing the minimum input of 85w rms at 4ohm to run them. so i cant run them off my headunit.

can any one recommend a good amplifier to run these bearing in mind i can be quite fussy about sound quality and dont have as much money as id like  cheers

plug them into the head unit and prove you cant run them off it first.. they wont be killed by underpower

Ok will try the 6x9s first tho as they require the most power and are a lot easier to fit. Will keep you posted

i have the previous gen of these speakers, they were called SEK's and im running off a 4x45w head unit perfectly fine, just dont crank it so much that the sound distorts and your speakers will be fine.

by the way the components take a little bodging to get mounted as the holes arent in the same places i sorted this by glueing then into the plastic casing then screwing them back on with washers big enough to grip the edges.

Wasn't too worried about drivers themselves. More worried about fitting tweeters behind dash, probably going to be a bitch to fit.

yep they are i still havent got mine fitting 100% right but if it helps what i did was cut out the old ones and all the plastic bits sticing out round them, took the new tweeters outa their cases and glued then in as closely as possible then using a knife cut out some of the rubber that the tweeters mount into on the door, unfortunately i dont have a knife shoarp enough to cut very deep so im just having to live with them sticking out a bit until i get my hands on a scalpel. however even the way they are now its not easy to notice and the doors shut fine.

I've a gen1 so they're gona go in dash right near the a pillars. Hoping that I can fit them without removing the dash. Sounds like a job for next Saturday morning in work.

Just as an idea - I'm running a Vibe Slick setup in the back of mine just off the head unit and it sounds quite tasty...
I've also mounted the tweeters in the doorcard themselves and I've had good results with that - might be easier than taking the dash out... Just a thought...

sorry didnt notice you have the gen1, may be a lot simpler if they are in the dash though if just harder to get at.

I've got a full JBL GT5 setup in my Gen1 (6.5" components up front, 6x9s in rear, twin 10" sub box and amp in boot). I mounted the tweeters in flush fitting pods on the mirror covers (The black triangular panels above the door card) without any problems!

Don't know what fittings your Vibe tweeters came with, but as I've got them, they're directly facing the driver and passenger, as they should IMO!

I have the same components with, I think, vibe slick 6*9s (tho they may be black air too, but i'm pretty sure they're slick) with a slick a1 amp powering them... TBH, it sounds ok in my opinion, but it could / should sound better... Tho that said, I think half my problem is the install... I wouldnt recommend the company I had do it and dont have the time, tools, knowledge nor patience to do it myself so had to trust someone else...

Yea the quality of vibes stuff is pretty top notch. im running the speakers from an alpine headunit which sounded alot better than the sony it replaced even with standard speakers.

Im definately gona fit the front tweeters ehind the grilles in the dash as it would anoy me if i could see them (fussy i know, but i have a slight case of ocd) gona have to wait till next sat until i get the time tho.

I find vibe to be very digital sounding, it's hard to describe, but they tend to lack warmth.

much like the music you play from them however there's a set for every taste.

I find it quite tinny, lacking depth kinda...

personally only tinnyness i've found is to do with the tweeters but thats my own fault for not using the provided crossovers and besides that the sound feels very standard, as to say no alterations to the original signal.

as i studied music for three years the most important thing i learnt about speakers is that what you want is perfect reproduction of the original sound. so lets say you want a speaker thats "warm" then you will be having extra mid and mid/bass end boosted which obviously if used with a song that was equalized for that sort of sound can end up being too bassy and mudied whereas on a flat designed EQ speaker this will sound better. ofcourse no'one is going to be perfectly happy with a flat EQ setup and so this is where the Head unit EQ is useful.

basically i'd prefer to add more of whatever than be unable to take it away.
